Many supervillains and superheroes have and continue to be created every other day, but none of them can be compared with Thanos – a “Mad Titan” published by the Marvel Comics in their American comic books. This fictional supervillain was created by an American writer/artist Jim Starlin and made his first appearance in the Invincible Iron Man in 2002. He has proved to be the most commanding villain in the Marvel Universe, clashing many heroes, among them the Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, X-Men and the Fantastic Four. His unmatched strength and supremacy have led to the belief that he is unbeatable. But is he?
One can only tell if there are other supervillains and superheroes who can defeat Thanos by first understanding his abilities. As a member of the Titanian Eternals – a special race of superhumans – Thanos possesses great powers and abilities. Besides, his abilities are more advanced due to the combination of his mutant-eternal heritage, bionic amplification, mysticism, and death. This combination gives him enormous strength, stamina, invulnerability, speed, immortality among other knacks.
Owing to his superhuman nature, Thanos can manipulate matter, live without food, air or water, resist old age and is immune to terrestrial diseases. As a trained hand-to-hand combatant in the art of war, Thanos can easily defend himself against any form of physical assault. He is also resistant to psychic attacks. Additionally, he is a super genius with the ability to create technologies that far exceed those found in contemporary earth. This therefore means that anyone planning to take on Thanos has to have exceptionally great capabilities.
Here are some of the popular supervillains and superheroes that have proved to have special abilities that can help defeat Thanos.
Spiderman
In the Avengers “Infinity War”, the Spiderman came face to face with the Mad Titan. It was a jaw dropping fight scene that left everyone on the edge of their seats. In fact, nobody ever thought that the Spiderman could withstand the enormous strength and power of Thanos. But at the end of it all, he proved everyone wrong. He even demonstrated certain unique skills and abilities that can help defeat Thanos.
The Spiderman first appeared in an anthology comic book “Amazing Fantasy” written by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1962. He was bitten by a radioactive spider, triggering mutations in his body that gave him superpowers and the ability to cling to inclined surfaces like walls. The bite also gave him superhuman strength and a sixth sense, which helps him to sense danger.
He also has a perfect balance, equilibrium and superhuman speed. And just like Thanos, the Spiderman is intellectually gifted and academically brilliant, with expertise in chemistry, applied sciences, engineering, mathematics, mechanics, physics and biology. He uses these abilities to construct devices that supplement his powers and skills. Without doubt, these skills, powers and devices can be combined to help defeat Thanos.
Now, let's entertain the idea of a DC, Marvel crossover...
Batman
Created by Bill Finger (writer) and Bob Kane (artist) for their comic book the “Detective Comics” in 1939, Batman is a fiction superhero dealing with crime and serving justice in the streets. He took up his vigilante role after witnessing the brutal murder of his father and mother as a child. After this horrible experience, he swore to avenge his parents by fighting crime.
Batman trained himself physically and mentally and crafts a bat-inspired persona to mete out justice to the afflicted in the society. Unlike other superheroes, Batman doesn’t have any superpower; rather, he depends of his genius intellect, martial arts skills, physical prowess, investigative skills, invincible will and vast wealth to deal with criminals. He is regarded as the best hand-to-hand superhero. With a combination of these special capabilities, Batman is definitely a real threat to Thanos.
Superman
Superman, a fictional superhero created by Jerry Siegel (writer) and Joe Shuster (artist), first appeared in a comic book titled “Action Comics” published in 1938. Since then, he has been accepted in newspaper strips, movies, video games, TV shows, radio shows and much more. Superman was raised by foster parents following the death of his father and mother. Even in his childhood, he possessed great strength and many superhuman abilities, including an impermeable skin.
He was advised by his foster parents to use these abilities for the good of humanity. So he decided to become a vigilante. In many comics, Superman portrays enormous strength, which enables him to lift cars over his head, crush coal into diamonds with his bare hands, and even shift different orbits of the planets. Aside from his great strength, Superman has a durable body that can resist bullets and even nuclear bombs. In some cases, he flies faster than light. All these capabilities are essential for the defeat of Thanos.
Joker
Created by Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson and Bo Kane, Joker is a fictional supervillain acting as the archenemy of many superheroes including Batman. The character has evolved from a psychopath with a distorted sadistic sense of humor to a goofy prankster. He was a normal human being before he fell into a tank full of chemicals that bleached his skin white and turned his hair green and lips red. This disfigurement drove him insane.
Although the Joker doesn’t possess any superhuman abilities, he is considered to be the perfect adversary and greatest challenger to many superheroes like Batman, Superman and even supervillains like Thanos. He normally uses his skills in chemical engineering to create poisonous and deadly concoctions to attack his adversaries. He also has capabilities to develop thematic weaponry such as razor-tipped poker cards, deadly joy buzzers, and acid-spraying collar flowers. With a combination of these skills and weapons, the Joker is definitely a major threat to Thanos.
